WEST CHICAGO – After the U.S. Supreme Court struck down President Trump’s executive order attempting to end birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants and temporary visitors, State Senator Karina Villa (D-West Chicago) released the following statement:
“The 14th Amendment is clear: if you are born in the United States, you are an American citizen.
“This ruling cements what the Constitution has long guaranteed. Children born on American soil are U.S. citizens, regardless of their parents’ immigration status. The Trump administration’s attempt to place conditions on birthright citizenship, a constitutional right that has characterized our nation for over a century, is a gross misuse of power.
“For millions of mixed-status families, this decision represents more than peace of mind. It affirms that they belong in this country, that their children are Americans and that they deserve the opportunity to continue to build their lives, despite xenophobic and nationalists sentiments perpetrated by the federal administration.
“As attacks on immigrant communities continue, we will not stop fighting. We will continue organizing, protecting our communities and building coalitions to support one another.”
