Villa invites residents to tenants’ rights workshops

WEST CHICAGO – Local residents are invited to attend two Know Your Rights for Tenants workshops in Aurora and West Chicago hosted by State Senator Karina Villa, in partnership with the Chicago Coalition to End Homelessness, to learn about the Landlord Retaliation Act and other tenants’ rights information.

“Housing instability is magnified by the lack of knowledge on tenants’ rights,” said Villa (D-West Chicago). “This critical information must be accessible to all our residents, especially members of our community who have faced issues with renting due to language barriers that have limited their understanding of their protections as tenants.”

Villa will host two tenants’ rights workshops – both will be in English and Spanish. The workshop in West Chicago will be held Friday, Oct. 25 at Casa Michoacán DuPage located at 900 E. Roosevelt Road from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The Aurora workshop will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at the Prisco Community Center located at 150 W. Illinois Ave. from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

These events will inform residents about their rights under the Landlord Retaliation Act that goes into effect on Jan. 1. The events will also present information on housing providers and legal assistance resources.

“Adequate housing is necessary to protect the physical, mental and financial well-being of our families,” said Villa. “Knowing your rights as a tenant protects you from malicious practices and potential harm. I strongly encourage residents to attend these events to help foster a healthier community.”

For more information, residents can contact Villa’s West Chicago Office at 630-326-9319 for English or 630-326-9419 for Spanish, or her Aurora Office bilingual line at 331-465-9690.
