Senate Progressive Caucus: Our commitment to protecting our most vulnerable populations remains unshakeable

SPRINGFIELD – Members of the Illinois Senate Progressive Caucus Executive Board released the following statement after hearing the governor’s budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2026:

“The foundation of human rights lies in the principle of access to health care. Every individual deserves comprehensive, quality medical care. In recent years, Illinois made remarkable progress in turning this vision into reality for thousands of our residents.

“Today, however, we face a grave reality of the potential assault on health care coverage due to cuts from the federal administration. We will not be intimidated by an administration that fails to recognize the true essence of America’s greatness — our diverse tapestry of individuals that form our framework.

“From the federal attacks on our freedoms, to the budgetary strains we face, we acknowledge it will be a tough year. It is vital we protect the budget allocation for the child tax credit so families can expect stability and plan for their children’s future, and work toward a comprehensive plan that uplifts our working class at a time when the cost-of-living continues to skyrocket.

“In the coming months, we vow to fight for a fair and equitable budget — one that ensures a high quality of life for all, irrespective of race, ethnicity, religion, disability or sexual orientation. Though the road ahead may be difficult, our commitment to leveling the playing field and protecting our most vulnerable populations remains unshakeable.”

State Senator Karina Villa (D-Chicago) further commented on the need to ensure working- and middle-class Illinoisans are prioritized in the upcoming budget.

“Hardworking families should not fear the grave financial uncertainty from the federal government that is attacking their pocketbooks,” said Progressive Caucus Co-Chair Villa. “It is far past the time for us to take a stand and fight to bring relief to working- and middle-class Illinoisans, and ensure millionaires pay their fair share.”

Additionally, State Senator Adriane Johnson (D-Buffalo Grove) continues to stand firm that DEI must be at the forefront of decisions.

“A budget that truly works for all is one that has diversity, equity and inclusion at the forefront,” said Progressive Caucus Co-Chair Johnson. “When DEI principles guide us, we create a structure that naturally lifts up everyone – recognizing our collective strength and ensuring equal access to opportunity.”

The members of the Illinois Senate Progressive Caucus Executive Board include Villa, Johnson, as well as Senators Mark Walker (D-Arlington Heights) and Mary Edly-Allen (D-Libertyville).
